The Melvins Shack

Well, where do I begin?  Got to the show and who did I see as I pulled in?  King Buzzo and Dale walking with Bill Bartell (White Flag, Riverside cop) to this pretty nice looking BMW sports car.  They were checking it out and stuff.  Finally, Dale got in with Bill and they took off for the streets of Riverside.  Buzz starts walking back to the Barn and he sees me and waves hi.  I wave back and he goes to shake my hand.  I do likewise.  Introductions all around.

He asked where I was from.  I said Hemet and he's like, "Hmm, Hemet.  Where's that?"  I asked him if he remembers playing in Indio a few years back at a place called Rhythm and Brews and he remembers.  I explain that I live just over the mountain from Indio in a stinky little valley.  "Stinky valley, huh?" says Buzz.  "How long did it take you to get here?"

"About 20 minutes," I replied.

BIG smile: "20 minutes, huh? Cool.  That's great that you didn't have to go all the way to the big city."

He commented on my "Addicted to Noise" shirt (crossed syringes)  I was wearing..

He asked how I liked the fan club.  I told him I liked.  I was lucky enough to get the shirts and "Pissing in the Wind" and also got the opportunity to buy the excellent video from the club.  He said good and that the guy running it had some setbacks, but he was getting on the ball soon with a new mailing.

I told him that I had ordered the Thorazine with the Buzzo Flexi and he said he hadn't heard it and wasn't sure what he'd said.
I asked him if he remembered "Spanky's" in Riverside and he got a big smile and said, "Man, that was 6 years or more ago. Yeah, Dale and I played with our friend Bill in "White Flag" many a time at Spanky's."  It turned out Bill was the guy cruising Dale around in the Beamer.

I talked about "On Tour" and he hadn't seen it.  I told him how I had a few seconds of air time when they showed the Melvins playing "Revolve".  He thought Lollapalooza sucked.

I talked about the TOOL tour and I told him I saw it in San Diego.  "Yeah, that was a fun time!" says Buzz.

He mentioned how this was only one of a handful of opening shows they've done this round.

I said I was on the list and he kinda sounded uncomfortable and said, "I don't know anything about that Internet stuff!"  So I dropped the subject.

Talked about how they'd just come in from San Jose and how much of a good time they'd had up there.

I asked to take a few pictures and he said sure.

During an intermission between bands, Dale was at the counter talking with some people.  A few other people swarmed around him, too.

The show was the best show I've been to at the Barn.  I was right directly up front and center.  I got there early and held on to the rail.  Got my head clonked so hard one time, I saw stars.  There were a handful of leather and stud punkers there who kept heckling the band.  After some rather loud heckling about Satan, Buzz lectured the audience and said,  "You know, I know that devil worship stuff is fun and all. But, let-me-tell-you-this--it leads to harder stuff.  So...", and then they whipped out "Montreal" complete w/audience participation.  After he got fed up with stage divers bumping him, he spoke again, "Now listen up you fuckers.  I'm not your Mother and I'm not your Father!  I don't wanna have to tell you all how to behave, but when you start fucking with the show and fucking up other peoples good time, I get pissed.  So knock it off you fucking brats!"  Right on Buzz!

People kept asking Buzz if he was queer. Buzz finally fessed up, "You know there's been a rumour floating around that I'm gay. Well, you know what. I'm gonna admit this right now to all of you. I'm a homosexual and I've always been a homosexual and I'm a damn good homosexual, you know why?" "Why? WHY!?" from the crowd. "Because I take it up the ass!" replies Buzz. "Yeah, Buzz gives the best rim jobs." says Mark.

It was funny to see Bill from "White Flag" in front of the between the barrier and the stage, eating a bowl of Fruit Loop/Lucky Charms and rocking out to the boys.  He soon put his bowl down when he realized we barrier huggers were flinging perspiration on him and into his food.

Got the set list that was taped to Dale's set from "White Flag" Bill.

After, the show, I left and went to my car to put on a dry shirt.  I went back in to use the facilities, and the place was mostly empty.  I met up with this wild lady, who had been between the stage and the barrier, who I thought might be Mackie.  She said she wasn't and had nothing to do with the Melvins.  She was just here to rock.  So, then Buzz is up at the barrier thanking the roadies and the management.  I point him out to this lady and she goes over to him and introduces herself.  Buzz shakes her hand and she proceeds to give him some sugar!  A big ol' hug!  "Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey,  hey, hey now!! " says Buzz.  "That's enough!"  So then he introduces her to this lady named Jamie who he's with and the wild lady starts hugging her.  She was definitely drunk!  She tells Buzz how I said he was such a nice guy and she just couldn't resist hugging him.  He looks over to me and laughs and says, "Sheesh!  He told you I was a nice guy, huh?"  Then he comes over to me and shakes my hand again and thanks me for the support.  I tell him thanks and that I hope to see them again soon.

That's it.  It was good for me.  I had a great time and now, my 33 year old body is feeling the effects.  Until next time!
