MMMMMMELVINS Casbah, San Diego, Saturday Jan 25, 2003
UGH! 1st night of the California Mini Tour was de-lightful! This is going
down as one of the best. For one thing, the Super Bowl is in town and things
were crazy. I'm no football fan, but the festival atmosphere in downtown San
Diego was impossible not to get into. More cops than I've ever seen in one
place since the L.A. Riots. Crowds EVERYWHERE. Most were Raiders fans. Went
by someone's truck that had burned. They had a pretty wild fireworks display
that spanned from downtown to Pt Loma and Sea World. The grand finale was
something.
The Casbah sits a couple miles from downtown, under the landing pattern for San Diego International. The planes come in only a couple hundred feet over the place. Crazy! To top it off, apartments are above the Casbah! That's pretty wild when you think about it. Immigrant families, with a lot of little kids, are living in those apartments. Insane! It'd be a music lover's dream home. Buzz was sitting in the driver's seat of their rented vans on the street next to the club. ALTAMONT and MELVINS are riding together. Looks like either Dale or Adam Jones' dog is along for the tour. No women. Adam's playing all the shows with MELVINS. Question of the evening: Will Maynard appear Sunday in Costa Mesa?
Sash from Australia sat in on drums for ALTAMONT. They were awesome and Dale sang Pirate Love since Joey wasn't there. The house loved them, except for a couple "friendly" hecklers.
ALTAMONT did their set and ended with a noise jam, during which, Dan broke down his rig while Dale wailed feedback. Kevin comes out and starts setting up, then out comes Adam Jones to his guitar and Virus. Lots of Tool fans there, going wild. Adam's naturally shy and doesn't go for publicity. Fans were grabbing him and shit as he walked on stage. Some people's kids! Kevin gets setup and starts in, Dale breaks down his guitar, switches with Sash and does a quick tune up. Then Buzzo gets onstage and sets up.
This must be the smallest stage I've seen MELVINS on. Besides maybe Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa. They smoked! Adam began "playing" an EPILADY over his pickups. Made some wild noises with that. He added some pretty cool stuff to the sound. They did the complete Ballad of Dwight Fry with Adam doing some groovy slide. Buzz spoke and thanked us for the good turnout!
Kevin's road icon this tour is a blue acrylic bong. He was sporting a new green bass, custom built by the guy who made his yellow bass. No merchandise. Next US tour starts in April. Please, let there be merch then! Met up with my pals Paul, Bonnie and Cale. It was a blast!
