REVIEWS

Just got back from the AMAZING melvins show.

1. altamont rocked. They've gotten a lot tighter since ive seen em last and Slims suprisingly did a good job with their sound.

2. EnemyMine was Mike from GodHeadSilos new thing. WAY too "emo" for me. Not much anything like Godheadsilo, though i wasnt a big fan of theirs either. They DID do one song that was an almost dirsct rip off of the Sun Ra song Space is the Place.

3. Melvins cooked. opened with new shit off the new record and a new song -maybe from the second record? then on to Let God Be Your gardener off Ozma, then to HogLeg off Eggnog, then to With Teeth off Lysol, then the Bit off Stag...I lost track...and correct me if i was wrong in the song order (who cares anyway?) it was great. Another song off stag -i'm not good with names (it was the "the more you know the brain, the more it homicide" song) Green manalishi (with the two pronged crown) giving tribute to the Peter Greene epic. they played more,, then ended with EYE FLYS! Buzz saying that it was his favorite song he ever wrote. Great show. they were selling a limited edition 2 headed baby with a melvins shirt. a numbered series outta 100. 15 bucks each, i picked up a couple of em.

I was at the Melvins show last night in SF. I was surprised to see Altamont take the stage because I didn't know that they were scheduled to play. I didn't recognize it at first until I noticed Dale was playing guitar. It was the first time I've really heard them. They are pretty cool. Enemymine wasn't all that great, but there were a couple of idiots in the crowd giving them shit, and that wasn't cool either.

The Melvins were badass. Kevin is hilarious to watch. Extremely entertaining. They played alot of the new stuff, amazon/AMAZON, which was very cool. Manky, Green Manalishi, See how pretty, see how smart, were all played, and all badass.

I give it a 6 out of 5 possible stars..........

yep. the melvins on thursday at slims was pretty badass. defenitely the loudest show i can remember going to. buzz osbourne has the best stage presence i can think of and his guitar sound was quite juicy. dales drum sound was incredible you could tell he was beating out as hard as he could on each hit. their new bassist, kevin rutemanis went off too. i've never seen someone play slide bass and he did it excellently. perfect for a band with no lead guitarist, adds some interesting textures. looked like he was having an orgasm with each pluck.
the song selectiion was great as well, stuff from gluey porch treatments, ozma, eggnog, lysol, stag, honky, the the maggot, and a couple songs that i think were new, really good pieces, not as hardcore as rest of set more bass and drum cool poppy kinda deal. i would say the highlights would be amazon, the bit, let god be your gardener, see how pretty see how smart- it was all good. crowd went craziest during first song on new album, amazon. crowd sang along at the end of that last song on lysol(indian album). they opened with manky and had an encore of eye flys "first melvins song I wrote and my favorite" i beleive was what he said. ended with dale slowly pounding on like one drum for probably five minutes.
it was a supertight supergood show man.

Hi Gene and everyone
Slim's well. I stood outside for most of Altamont cause the line was really not that long but really slow. The other band that played (name: ?) was alright kinda Rorshack revisited, not really appropriate. I dont think they added anything to the event. Anyway. Dale's drum kit is currently crowned by the largest cymbal ever. Its as big a bass drum its looks like it could crush you. It also seemed to me like they had some new gear. I know they got rid of some/all of the bass rig that Mark used, so obviously Kevin has his own. (Altamont now uses most of what used to be Melvins gear). But I think some of Buzz stuff is new too. Hopefully they got plenty cash from the record to buy new toys. Well Kevin seems to have found his zone, such a spectical to watch, and his outfits are better than Mark's. They played a bunch of new songs first have and then brought out the old guns (NO night goat thank you Dale) and a really fuckin spooky version (of an already spooky song) Eye Flys. It would have, could have been an awesome show if it had not been in Slim's.
thanks

The set list from the SF show, as well as the Sacramento show, is as follows;

Manky
See How Pretty...
Amazon
Let It All Be (Bootlicker)
Let God....
Hog Leg
With Teeth
The Bit
Bloat
Green Manalishi
Lovely Butterfly
Jew Boy (Bootlicker)
Eye Flys

At the San Jose show Green Manalishi was replaced with Youth of America.
Do not miss this tour. If you do, you deserve to be gang probed by aliens. The set is amazing and hopefully you will be lucky enough to experience Kevin's zebra stripes.
However, don't be a jackass and give Enemymine grief. Give them porn, they would appreciate that. Kunka is taking on all comers for full contact, padless football if you are interested.
If you plan on hoisting your sorry ass up on stage beware of the boot of the Roadbull.

Ron

they played The Bit, Eye Flys, and The Bloat...I think that was as slow as it got. they did one off Honky...it was a pretty rockin set. Best I've seen them since when they played the Auditorium in L.A. 5 years ago or so.

Mike Desert

Dale and friends fuckin rocked out last night here in Portland. They were joined by a keyboardist/ noise maker for a couple songs, It kinda looked like the guitarist from tool, that Adam guy, but since i aint the biggest tool fan so I dont quite know. He also helped out buzz on guitar for Eyes Flys. It was good and loud. Just what I expected.

Hello,
Ok, first I'll tell you the good news, because I know a lot of you on this list are asking yourselves, "Are the Melvins finished after this 3 albums thing???"
At the show at the Breakroom in Seattle on Friday night I got a chance to talk to Buzz before the show. He said that there was no way they were even thinking of breaking up or calling it quits. He said that they are going to keep on playing for as long as they want to and they still have tons of desire to continue. He also told me that the Cows have called it quits and that Kevin is now pretty much permanent (or at least as permanent as a Melvins bassist can be). He talked to me about living in Hollywood and some bands he likes to listen to. He likes Melt Banana and another band called the Latin somethings (I can't remember the name, it was Latin SOMETHING!). I asked him about Leif Garrett and the Smells Like Teen Spirit cover their gonna have on the Crybaby CD. He said it sounded good. I asked him if Leif Garrett was a fan of the Melvins before hand and he said, "No, he had never even heard of us before." Leif Garrett's record label got a hold of the Melvins and that's how the magic happened. Then I asked if it was fun working with the early 80's child star. Buzz said that he was "smacked up" the entire time. Old habits die hard I guess. Oh, I almost forgot, Buzz said he doesn't ever look at Melvins web sites and he doesn't give a fuck about this list. He said it in a nice way though...
So anyway, the show was excellent, it was the same as the other reviews. They played Revolve, lots of new stuff, some old stuff, and Eye Flys was the finally. Adam from Tool was there. Kevin was wearing the zebra moo-moo. Dale was sporting a black eye. I don't know why. And the opener Enemymyne (i spelled that wrong i think) was awesome!!! For those who care, godheadSilo is done, they broke up and Mike the best bass player ever is now playing bass for enemymyne. He sings too. The other part of that band is a 2nd bass player and a good japanese drummer. Go melvins...

ps- i finally met dan raymond from this here list. dan is the meanest son of a bitch you'd ever want to meet. be careful you don't fuck with him or you will have a steel toe planted firmly up your anus. and that doesn't feel good, unlike being fisted.

Hey everybody,
Did anyone else on this list see the 2:00PM show at the Velvet Elvis in Seattle?
It was the only show I could get to (barely made it) My first live Melvins, and it was almost a religious experience. I can't remember everything played, Not in order: Eye Flys, The Bit, Let god be your gardener, Lovely butterflies, Green Manalishi, Let it be all (from bootlicker, rocked, fast beat)a Vipers cover that escapes me, Sacrifice( Buzz on mike, Kevin on guitar and Krist Novoselic (I think) on bass!, see how pretty see how smart (synth miked too high!) and thats about all I can recall now. Awsome show, LOUD, fuck those guys are loud, thought drum check was gonna kill me, knew i was in it for the ride then. Bout killed us with drums and double gongs to close the show (long after Buzz left) Krist threw his bass up and the audience caught it.
Small space, I was back about two rows in the seats, standing, and Buzz wasn't more than 15-20 feet away, too short to do the up front thing. Got my first Melvins T-shirt.
Two hours of Hard Melvins! Enemymine was pretty good too unfamiliar tunes but liked the sound, probably pick-up the CD
In a word: Fuck-me!
Melvins Forever! Buzz is King! Dale, the ringing is almost gone! Kevin, Richter would have been proud! Adam, down just a tad okay? otherwise, way to go!
-- "We like a bit of that, don't we, Yes we do!"

The four shows I saw (Slim's, the two Velvet Elvis Shows, and one at the Breakroom), each ran about an hour for the Melvins sets. This is the set list from both friday Seattle shows:

Manky
See How Pretty
Amazon
Let it all be
Let God play bass (obviously "Let God be your Gardener")
Hog leg
w/ teeth
bit
bloat
Youth of America
Jew Boy Flowerhead
Eye Flies

Someone posted that they played Revolve, which wasn't true but who's fucking counting, eh? At Slim's, they didn't play Youth of America (which is a FUCKING rocking Wipers cover, that they said they were going to stop playing live...), but did play Green Manilishi, AMAZON, and something off Honky that I forget... At the Saturday Velvet Elvis show, they played a really long set starting with Eye Flies, ending with Sacrifice, and they played both G. manilishi and Youth of A (yep, three covers). Plus Kris(t) Noveselic from Nirvana played on Sacrifice and they flirted with the idea of playing Teen Spirit but didn't.
But the really weird fucking thing about the Saturday show was how much they talked... I remember going to see the three set Melvins show when they didn't say a word the entire time, but here they were spending like a good 2 or 3 minutes between every song making clever remarks, bad jokes, and heavily praising the bands whose songs they were covering. Also Buzz was talking about his haircut and Dale was like "What Haircut?". Anyway... I thought it was funny.
Did anyone see the Saturday Breakroom show or the Olympia show on Sunday? If so please share.

P.S. "Let it all be" is off Bootlicker and I think it's hella cool. Jew Boy Flowerhead was not as impressive but still the Melvins nonetheless.
P.P.S. If I hear anymore about that stupid Leech release I'm going to throw up. Why don't we all start fucking comparing penis sizes for christ sake?!?! For those of you that have it, great. I'm real happy for you. You have an OFFICIAL (I guess, I really don't care) re-release of old shit. But don't get all fucking elitist cause if you were really cool you'd have the fucking originals on vinyl (and then it might not sound like it was recorded in a washing machine). For those of you that don't have it and are getting into a hissie fit about how it's such a bootleg: Who gives a rat's ass? I would never pay money for an album if I didn't think the band was going to see any of the cash, but that's my decision. If someone is collecting melvins shit, it's not like they aren't going to buy Maggot cause they have some crappy bootleg they pay $30 for. Just shut up and let's talk about what's really fucking important... like why they aren't playing Boris live anymore! arghhh....

The song off Honky they played at Slim's was Lovely Butterfly......
