It was another fun Melvins show despite what I thought was a boring Black Heart Procession. They were piano, keyboard, Chris
Isaak Fender-tremolo guitar style, with drums and pretty vocals. Sounded
like mad love songs. Someone called it psychedelic jazz, eh. Best thing they
did was break out the saw and bow, which I didn't think was that great for a Melvins opener.
I really liked the boots/muumuus ensemble the Kevin and Buzz were wearing!
New black calf high boots and black muumuus with fat red crosses on them.
Dale had some sporty black unders. I liked what Kevin's done with his hair!
Those boots reminded me of boots we had in the military. The "pole jocks"
who were power line workers had boots like that with steel toes. Everyone
wanted them. I have a pair, they aren't very good on the feet, though.
Melvins were a 3 piece, but I have an ear virus that's causing me to have
double vision in one eye and vertigo, so I dizzily saw two of each! They
did most of the new album and some older (thanks Cale!!):
The Fool, the Meddling Idiot
Anaconda
Queen
Dr. Geek
Foaming
Black Stooges
Let It All Be
Revolve - Judy - The Brain Center at Whipples
The Anti-Vermin Seed
Little Judas Chongo
Manky
-very pregnant pause-
Youth of America
It's Shoved
I wasn't able to get anywhere near the band. Security was TIGHT there. They
were being real dicks about cameras until the pit got going, then they
changed priorities. One guy strolled across the stage and dove. Nobody
caught him and he was ejected. I got about a roll off. Cale from the list
was standing next to me up front on one side taping the show. The post-NOG fellers were on the other side. Paul S was digitally video taping the show just behind the pit. Dale's wife Maureen snuck out from stage right for the last few songs and watched. Mackie was mingling with the crowd and signing
autographs. They had H.A.T. and Millennium Monsterworks for sale. No other
merch. I bought both, but didn't get Mackie to sign, because I'd put them in
my car. Darn! Paul got his signed by her.
I guess they sorta did an encore! After Manky, they did the silent treatment
"pregnant pause" thing for about a minute. There were people yelling to play
this or that, etc. I expected Buzz to tell them to, "shut up, we don't do requests!", but they
just stood there staring back at us. It seemed like they were waiting for an previously
agreed upon level of silence and then Dale kicked into YOA! The crowd went wild!
All in all a great show. It was nice to hear the new songs live. Dr. Geek's high on my list of personal faves. I can hardly wait to see them again next month at the Troubadour!!
These came out dark...
