Late 2000 Mini-Tour
29 September 2000
I first ran into Dave Stone and had a short conversation with him. He's one nice people. Just a friendly, honest character. I asked him if this was his last show w/the Melvins. No. He's gonna be there for the European Tour in March. Dave was excited to hear the Melvins have their Croatian fans. (I didn't know it, but he told me Joe Preston is Croatian.) He's gonna do some recording of the Melvins. And he's just digging his time touring with the band.
I also walked in as Puny Human took the stage. They were great! The singer, Jim, looked exactly like this crazy guy that used to live in my neighborhood. He's got a great warhorse voice and did some gnarly pumping up of the crowd. They had some pretty cool riffs going, too. Damone!! There set was cut kinda short by the jerks on board control, though.
The Lewd. Melvins covered them. First time in LA in 18 years and Buzzo brought 'em down for payback time! Hockin' loogies on 'em seemed to be the activity of choice. Snot and spit were flying. Fucking gross. I managed not to get lobbed by strange bodily fluids. All in good fun. It was great to see Kurdt Vanderhoof still jamin' (loved that first Metal Church release!) They definitely had their fans in attendence.
Yep, that was the Melvins gnarly "Halo of Flies" (Alice Cooper) they opened with. A cool version of Gun Club's "Promise Me". First time I've heard the re-worked Revolve and it was lovely. Kevin did some awesome feedback stuff on it. Tipping the Lion was nice to hear as well as a throbbing version of Lovely Butterfly. It was the best live version I've seen! Fuckin' At the Stake! Love the point where Dale taps his little 5 inch cymbal (whaddya call it?). The same dumbasses kept continually getting on the stage during the Melvins. Security only took them off ocassionally. Melvins orders? Buzz surely did get pissed when that ass slammed him during Night Goat. Dale did a great pick up of the vocals while Buzz spun around like a dirvish. Looked like Buzz was gonna pop that kid with his guitar but thought better of it. Not worth it. Buzz didn't speak but seemed to enjoy himself. Dale was having a blast. Kevin and Dave were having a good time, too.
Set List in order:

Halo of Flies
Okee From Muskokee
Tipping the Lion
Promise Me
Snake Appeal
At the Stake
Lovely Butterfly
Let It All Be
Revolve

Got to see some Melvins-L folks: Paul and Bonnie (more nice people! prost!), Rob H (the Stealth) was an unexpected surprise, the NOG guys. Missed Steve and Mike D, though. Said "Howdy" to the Rev. Emily Burton of Fireball Ministry. Rev Jim was vidtaping Puny Human. Marilyn Manson was supposedly checking out the show. I thought for sure they'd do an encore this time. The people chanted a couple rounds of "MELVINS!MELVINS!MELVINS!" (haha, some were chanting "Melvin" instead) but no such luck. It was another great Melvins show at the Troubadour.
