MELVINS
The Troubadour
Hollywood, CA
Spring 2001 Tour

Hank III Website
I don't know. I just wasn't as thrilled by Hank III this time. Maybe it's the new elements of his backup band. Whatever, he was kind of a dud. He seemed to be trying, but something was missing. His fiddlist and stand-up bass player I reckognized from Las Vegas last September, but his new drummer, guitarist and that keyboard puncher. It was nice to see Dale play drums for the first two "country roots" numbers. Johnny Cash "Cocaine Blues" and I don't remember the other. But I'd have to say I was definitely disappointed in the entire Hank III performance this time.
It was sold out. The Melvins were great. It was Dave's last scheduled Melvins show. He's touring w/Unwound starting in September. I wore my earplugs. My ears don't hurt. Security sucked and people kept getting on the stage. Drunk blonde in thigh-high boots tried to rub her ass against Buzz's ass. Drunk stage walker was body slammed off the stage by Buzz. I ran out of film before that and am still cussing. I don't know if it's Hollywood, the Troubadour or what, but it's hard to talk with the band there. Maybe if I'd of hung out after the show, but I opted for the long drive home.
Same set list I believe they kept to this tour. But there was the added attraction of Dale doing a capella version of Greg Allman's "Whipping Post" standing on his drum stool:
Colossus of Destiny
Eye Flys (Loooong and brutal)
Oven
Anaconda
Ballad of Dwight Fry
Halo of Flies
At the Stake
Let It All Be
amazon/AMAZON
Cherub
The Bit
Night Goat
With Teeth
"Whipping Post" (a capella Dale)
Youth of America
Hung Bunny/Roman Bird Dog (Longer than the version in San Diego last month.)
